Ron Davidson and Sunderland AFC
Ron watched football all over the North East, at Feethams, Ayresome Park and even St James’ Park, but growing up in Roker, his heart was always with Sunderland. When he came back from the 1973 FA Cup final at Wembley he couldn’t speak for three days, and he kept his cup final scarf, rosette and programme for more than 50 years.
He became the club’s official artist, and the high point of his career was being asked by Sir Bob Murray, the club’s chairman, to paint a commemorative watercolour of the new Stadium of Light. Into the Light shows the miners of Wearmouth Colliery, where the stadium now stands, rising out of the dark into the light of the crowd. He also marked the club’s move from its old home in 1997 with Farewell to Roker Park, and painted the club’s stories in Legends of Roker, Roker Park, the Final Chapter, Champions of 99, Goal and Super Kev, his painting of Kevin Phillips.
Every painting is reproduced as a Giclée print from Ron’s original watercolour, in A4, A3 or A2, unmounted or mounted, and as an A5 card. A print makes a lasting gift for a Sunderland fan, and every order supports the Great North Air Ambulance Service, the charity Ron chose to support.
