The Last Ships, a painting by Ron Davidson

A Life Spent Painting the North East

Ron Davidson picked up a brush to paint Joe, the family’s corgi, and never put it down again. After 20 years in industry he painted the last ships built on the Wear. He painted more than 400 pub signs for Vaux, and was commissioned by Sunderland AFC to paint Into the Light for the Stadium of Light. In 2014 he retired to Romaldkirk, where the light of Teesdale took over his later work. Ron died in 2024. In 2026, his daughter Janet and her husband Andrew brought his life’s work together for the first time.

“Ron was a talented craftsman and a proud Sunderland supporter, and I always admired the care and pride he put into his work for the Club. Pieces like Into The Light and his tributes to Roker Park captured something truly special about Sunderland and its football heritage.”

— Sir Bob Murray CBE, former Chairman, Sunderland AFC

Every Print Supports the Great North Air Ambulance

The Great North Air Ambulance Service was Ron’s own chosen charity, and raising money for it was his wish. His family carry that on: every print, mounted print, card and calendar sold supports GNAAS under an agreement with the charity. Read about GNAAS.
